New Wanni Commander assumes duties

Major General P.S.B. Kulatunge RSP USP USAWC, former Director General, General Staff of Army Headquarters Colombo, took over as the new Commander Security Forces Headquarters Wanni [SFHQ-(W)]after a brief ceremony held at his office on 2 September 2004.

The new Commander was accorded a guard of honour by the 11 Gemunu Watch on his arrival at the SFHQ -W and religious rites followed before he assumed duties at his office.

Major General P.S.B. Kulatunge later on attended the staff briefing after he joined the Commanders of 21 and 56 Divisions, Area Commander Mannar and Senior Officers of the SFHQ –(W) at a tea party.

Enlisted to the Sri Lanka Army on 20th July 1971, he received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion at the Gemunu Watch on 14th October 1972.

After his promotion as Lt. Colonel on 1 October 1989, he served as Staff Officer 1- Operational Headquarters, Ministry of Defence and General Staff Officer 1 of 23 Brigade. On 20th July 1990, he was made Commanding Officer, 6th Battalion of the Gemunu Watch.

On his promotion to the rank of Colonel on 27 June 1993, he was appointed as the Colonel General Staff 2 Division Anuradhapura , Deputy Commandant Kotelawala Defence Academy and Assistant Military Secretary.

His efficiency in performing duties brought him the promotion as a Brigadier on 1 December 1994 after which he was appointed the Commander 22 Brigade, Trincomalee, Coordinating Officer Trincomalee South and then as Director Training, AHQ on 28th December 1996. He was then posted at 56 Division Mirusuvil and 54 Division Elephant Pass as Deputy General Officer Commanding. He had also oversaw duties of General Officer Commanding 52 Division, Warani. He then became Colonel of the Regiment Gemunu Watch before he was elevated to the rank of Major General on 01st May 2000.

His duties also covered General Officer Commanding post at 11 Division Panagoda. He continues to be the Colonel of the Regiment Gemunu Watch. To his credit he oversaw duties as Security Forces Commander, Jaffna for a short while before he was appointed Director General, General Staff on 06th September 2003.

His overseas visits include India, Singapore, USA, UK and several other countries where he followed Young Officers' Course, Staff Officer Course, Intelligence Course, Senior Command Course and attended the Special Operations Confab, seminar on International Military Education, etc. He is a M.A. graduate from the prestigious United States Army War College.
