New VIR Colonel of the Regiment Assumes Office

Major General Chandana Gunawardana assumed office as the new Colonel of the Regiment, Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) on Wednesday (24) during a simple ceremony at the VIR Regimental Headquarters, Boyagane, Kurunegala.

He succeeded Major General Ajith Kariyakarawana who retired from the Army on Monday (22) after an illustrious service of 36 years.

The new Colonel of the Regiment on arrival at the VIR Headquarters premises was received by Brigadier W.S Ariyasinghe, VIR Centre Commandant and greeted in a Guard Turnout and a ceremonial parade by Regimental troops after he paid tribute to the VIR War Heroes’ Monument.

After ceremonial formalities, Major General Chandana Gunawardana planted a Mango sapling to mark the occasion.

After a while, amidst religious observances Major General Chandana Gunawardana symbolically signed a formal document to signify the acceptance of the new office.

Later on, he addressed the troops at ‘The Salute’ Reception hall towards the end of the day’s programme.
