New SLSC Colonel Commandant, Major General Nilantha Hettiarachchi Assumes Office

The Sri Lanka Signal Corps (SLSC) presented military honours and warm greetings to the newly-appointed SLSC Colonel Commandant, Major General Nilantha M Hettiarachchi, Chief Signal Officer of the Army during a formal ceremony, held recently at the SLSC Regimental Headquarters at Panagoda as he arrived at the premises as the 9th Colonel Commandant of the Sri Lanka Signal Corps.

He succeeded Major General Ajith Wijesinghe, who retired from the Army after an illustrious service of more than 34 years.

As the initial military formality, the new Colonel Commandant was warmly welcomed by the SLSC Regimental Centre Commandant at the entrance to the Regimental Headquarters complex and invited him to receive the Guard Turnout salute before he was conducted to pay tribute to the memory of fallen SLSC War Heroes at the Regimental monument.

A few minutes later, a ceremonial military parade, commanded by Lt Colonel P.H.N Chandrasekara, Commanding Officer, 5th Regiment Sri Lanka Signal Corps honoured the newly-appointed Colonel Commandant where he received the salute from the special dais. Then in the office, Major General Nilantha Hettiarachchi lit the traditional oil lamp and placed his signature for an official document to symbolize the acceptance of his new office, amidst chanting of Seth Pirith by Buddhist monks. The day’s ceremony reached the culmination with his formal address to both Officers and All Ranks and refreshments with All Ranks at the ORs' Mess.

Major General Nilantha Hettiarachchi born on 25 February 1965 successfully completed his primary and secondary education at Ananda College, Colombo he joined the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet in Intake 21, on 6 June 1985 and successfully completed the basic military training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyathalawa and Officers’ training school of Pakistan Army. After having attained prestigious commissioned rank of Second Lieutenant on 25 January 1986 and posted to Sri Lanka Signal Corps, he began his professional military career as a professional Signaller. Major General Nilantha Hettiarachchi is also the Chief Signal Officer of the Sri Lanka Army. During his thirty-three years of unblemished active service he has held many Command, Instructional and Staff appointments in various capacities in operational and non-operational areas in the country.
