New SLE Colonel Commandant Assumes Office

Major General Jagath Gunawardena, the newly appointed 17th Colonel Commandant, Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE) assumed office during a charming ceremony, held at the SLE Headquarters on Thursday (25).

He was greeted to military honours and ceremonials before a large gathering of Senior Officers, Officers and Other Ranks.

The day’s Chief Guest on his arrival at the SLE Headquarters was warmly welcomed by the Centre Commandant, Brigadier Ravindra Dias and accorded a Guard Turnout. Afterwards, the visiting Colonel Commandant laid a floral wreath at the War Heroes’ monument to pay his tribute to all those who made the supreme sacrifice in defence of the country. A few minutes later, a parade saluted him in the parade ground.

Thereafter, Major General Jagath Gunawardena signed an official document to signify the acceptance of the new office as the new Colonel Commandant amidst chanting of ‘Seth Pirith’ by members of the Maha Sangha.

Major General Jagath Gunawardena afterwards had a formal meeting with Senior Officers and attended refreshments with All Ranks at the Convention Centre.

As the next event of the day’s ceremony, Colonel Commandant addressed All Ranks and spoke out his mind and the future vision for the SLE. Afterwards, the Colonel Commandant had a meeting with all Commanding Officers and Regimental Sergeant Majors and received an update on the role and tasks of different formations. A large gathering of Officers were present during the proceedings.
