New SLAVF Commandant Assumes Office

Major General Vikum Liyanage assumed duties as the 47th Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) amidst religious and military formalities at the SLAVF Headquarters premises at Seethawaka, Kosgama on Tuesday (05).

The day’s proceedings began with reviewing of the Guard Turnout accorded in his honour. The Senior Officer was warmly received by Major General Christy Jayasinghe, Deputy Commandant, SLAVF before an elegant Guard of Honour, presented by Sri Lanka National Guard troops saluted the incoming Commandant.

The Senior Officer afterwards at his new office, amidst blessings of all religious faiths, placed his signature on an official document, symbolizing the formal acceptance of his new appointment.

Delivering his inaugural address, he spelt out his vision for the SLAVF and gratefully acknowledged the services of previous Commandants and all Senior Officers and urged everybody's support to implement the role and tasks which are voluntarily being executed by the successors of the Volunteer Force. Further, he emphasized the need to work in compliance with the Army’s ‘Way Forward Strategy’ of the Army Chief while heading towards a professional Army.

Signifying his inauguration of the office, the Senior Officer planted a sapling in the new camp premises. A gathering of Senior Officers and Other Ranks attended the inaugural occasion of the new office.

The programme of the day went ahead with strict adherence to health directives issued for COVID – 19.
