New Seva Vanitha Unit Office at AHQ Inaugurated

The newly-established office of the Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU), which has spent more than Rs. 17 m for welfare of soldiers in the past few months and still dedicated was inaugurated at Sri Jayawardenepura Army Headquarters this morning (16) during a simple ceremony amid religious blessings.

Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff, Commander of the Army and Head, National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) as the Chief Guest attended the ASVU office opening this morning (16) at the invitation of Mrs Sujeewa Nelson, President, ASVU. The formal ribbon-cutting by the day’s Chief Guest, amid ‘Pirith’ chanting symbolized the warming of the new office premises.

The ASVU under the guidance of the Commander of the Army caters to the pressing needs of Army personnel and has been actively engaged in providing financial grants for construction of new houses, educational needs of children of fallen War Heroes, disabled War Heroes and serving War Heroes, most essential medical facilities, purchase of lands for construction of houses, purchase of medical accessories, supply of medicine to injured War Heroes and other benefits to all Officers, soldiers and civil employees.

In parallel with the opening, the ASVU had its monthly meeting and elected new office-bearers for vacant appointments for the coming year (2020 - 2021). In addition, a large stock of household appliances, accessories, furniture and other essentials to the value of Rs 1.6 m were also distributed among family members of fallen War Heroes, disabled War Heroes and serving Army personnel on the same occasion.

At the same occasion, a cash donation of Rs 1 lakh as medical cost of a seriously ill spouse of a Senior Officer of the Sri Lanka Light Infantry was made as humanitarian assistance. Likewise, another civil employee’s son who is qualified to follow an IT degree at the University was gifted with a laptop, enabling him to continue his IT studies.

Expanding their helping hand further, the ASVU granted house completion assistance to one Officer and three Other Ranks, each receiving Rs 350,000/= from the ASVU.

The monthly meeting that followed after performance of one-minute silence and singing of the ASVU theme song saw election of new office-bearers. Accordingly, Mrs Sagara Gunawardene was appointed the Vice President, Mrs Maya Fernando, the Secretary, Mrs H. Bansajayah, Deputy Secretary, Mrs Priyadarshani Sirinaga, Public Relations Officer, Mrs Kumuduni Wanigasooriya, Assistant Public Relations Officer and Mrs Chami Wanasinghe, Project Officer.
