New Seva Vanitha President Takes Over

MRS. Manjulika Aruna Jayasuriya took over the Presidency of the Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB), the welfare service wing of Army ladies on Thursday (16) morning after a brief ceremony at the SVAB Headquarters.

Mrs. Anoma Fonseka, the outgoing SVAB President who during her three-year long tenure executed a series of commendable projects for the benefit of soldiers, disable soldiers, children of soldiers, family members of slain soldiers and construction of pre-schools, welfare shops, etc remains the brainchild behind the upcoming Senehasa school for children with special needs in Army families. The school that cost over Rs. 300 million is to be opened shortly, accommodating hundreds of such children for special training that fits their disabilities. 

Mrs. Jayasuriya was received at the entrance to the premises by SVAB vice president Mrs. Anusha Samarasinghe and conducted to the main office where members of the Maha Sangha, led by Ven. Mawarale Baddhiya Thero blessed the office reciting Seth Pirith after religious offerings were made to Buddha in the office. Later on the new President symbolically received official documents from the outgoing President in accordance with previous practices. She left her signature symbolically inducting the office. Mrs. Anoma Fonseka greeted her new successor with a bouquet of flowers.           

Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya who was actively, engaged in SVAB projects has been taking care of the SVAB managed Ran Kekulu pre-school for the past few years. Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya, a past pupil of Vishaka Vidyalaya has also been the President in the Mechanized Infantry Seva Vanitha Branch since 8th March 2008 as the first to hold that office. Mrs. Majulika Jayasuriya until to-date has been the Public Relations Officer (PRO) to the SVAB. She has been instrumental in providing active support to the ongoing scholarship programmes, donation of sewing machines to Ranaviru widows, hospital visits, resolution of family grievances, etc. By profession she had been a senior control supervisor in the Sri Lankan Airlines.       

The outgoing President Mrs. Fonseka in her farewell address to the staff recalled the support given by them to carry out SVAB projects, initiated by her in the past few years. She also assured her continued cooperation to her successor for continuation of the projects.   

Major General Mohanthi Peiris, Treasurer, SVAB and almost all members of the executive committee attended the ceremony. After the ceremony, Mrs. Jayasuriya presided the monthly meeting where she spelt out her vision for the SVAB.
