Heralding a new phase in the ongoing ‘Northern Spring’ (Uthuru Wasanthaya) mega development project in the North and fulfilling one more election pledge in ‘Mahinda Chintana’ vision policy His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa Sunday (16) morning declared open the newly-built 288 m long Sangupiddy Bridge which connects the Jaffna peninsula with Pooneryn on A-32 road across Nawatkuli, Kerathivu and Mannar.
The construction of this historic bridge at a cost of Rs 1032 million, regarded a milestone in our march for development, cuts short the travel distance from Puttalam by about 80 km on this new road, compared to A-9 road and serves as the alternative trade and travel route to Jaffna – Colombo back and forth.
This is the shortest route that connects the North with the South covering areas such as Vanathavilluwa, Silawathura and Pooneryn – Jaffna.
The A-32 road remained under the control of terrorists for nearly 30 years and served it as a transit coastal belt for terrorist supplies and training bases for terrorist activities.
This precast iron bridge of British design will become a hub of business and trade activities once the entire road is completed to suit modern standards of road-making.
Today’s opening of this Sangupiddy bridge reawakens and rekindles hopes of both Northerners and Southerners as it will easily pave the way for co-existence, peace and reconciliation.
Today’s ceremony was attended by a host of Ministers, Secretaries, Tri-service Chiefs and invitees.
