New Outdoor Volleyball Court Gifted to Record-making VIR Volleyball Players

The new Outdoor Volleyball Court constructed at the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) Regimental Centre at Boyagane, Kurunegala with Regimental Funds was declared open by the Colonel of the Regiment of the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment, Major General Sisira Pilapitiya on Saturday (7).

The new facility completed in a short span of time in order to improve sporting abilities of the soldiers in accordance with high standards with illumination facilities for the game both during day and night was a long-felt sports need of the Centre. To mark the opening of the new Volleyball court, an exhibition Volleyball game was played between two teams; Regimental Volleyball Squad vs Regimental Volleyball Team, formed in 1999.

VIR Volleyball Team emerged as the Army’s Champions in ‘A’ Division in 2011, 2016 and Champions in ‘B’ Division in 2003. They also emerged as Runners-Up in ‘A’ Division in 2008, ‘B’ Division in 2001, Super League in 2018 and also in two Novices Runners-Up slots in 2014 and 2018. At present, 6 VIR players have been enrolled to the Army Volleyball Team due to their impressive achievements.
