New MoD Project Recruits First Batch of Retired Service Personnel as Technicians

In another epoch-making welfare measure, launched for the benefit of retired service personnel with technical knowhow, President Maithripala Sirisena presented letters of appointment to retired 50 service personnel for employment as technicians in the state sector during a ceremony at the Presidential Secretariat on Tuesday (11).

The first phase of the project, implemented by the State Ministry of Defence under the guidance of Hon Ruwan Wijeywardene, State Minister of Defence selected 50 retired technical officers from the Army (20), Navy (2) and Air Force (28), to be employed as technical officers in 25 District Secretariats across the island on payment basis.

Having obtained the Cabinet approval in March this year, following the presentation of the Cabinet paper to this effect by the President himself, State Ministry of Defence has so far received a total of 6292 applications from retired tri-service personnel who are willing to serve in the spheres of agriculture, civil engineering, education, electronic, IT, electricity, health, hotel and tourism, maintenance, technical and engineering, production, etc.

Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of National Policies, sponsors of the project would pay a monthly salary not less than Rs 20,000/= plus transport and other allowances, in addition to the pensions those employees are drawing as at present.

Today’s ceremony was attended by Minister of Home Affairs, Mr. Vajira Abeywardena, Secretary to the President Mr. P. B. Abeykoon, Secretary to Ministry of Home Affairs, Mr. T.P.G.N. De Alwis, Additional Secretary to Ministry of Defence, Mr. S. Hettiarachchi, Secretary to State Ministry of Defence, Mr. A.P.G. Kithsiri, Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Kolitha Gunatilleke, Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva, Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijeyagunarathne, Air Marshal Kapila Jayampathy, Commander of the Air Force and a group of state officials.
