New House Constructed for Reputed Athlete Chaminda Wijekoon Warmed in Ceremony


Warrant Officer I Chaminda Wijekoon of Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA) Regiment who brought laurels to the country securing the world’s 12th place in 1500 m Marathon Run after collecting South Asian Gold Medal (2010), Asian Silver Medal (2011) and acquiring the fourth place in Commonwealth Games in 2010 in an unbroken record spree became the owner of a brand new house on Friday (6) in Amunugoda, Imbulgoda.
 
Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army, gracing the house-warming ceremony as the Chief Guest, gave away the keys of the new house to the athlete, Chaminda Wijekoon, amid religious observances in the presence of a gathering of senior Army officers, fellow-athletes, family members and well-wishers as the auspicious minute struck.

Ministry of Housing and Construction, Sri Lanka Athletics Federation and Sri Lanka Artillery Regiment provided the complete financial sponsorship of Rs 5.2 million for construction of the new house as an appreciation of his achievements in the field of athletics in the past couple of years, both at national and international levels.

Troops of the Sri Lanka Artillery Regiment and 6 Sri Lanka Engineers Regiment donated their labour for construction of this beautiful house.

Soon after receipt of keys for the new house, the Chief Guest, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayaka, Commander of the Army, together with the house recipient and Major General Jagath Rambukpotha, Colonel Commandant, Sri Lanka Artillery Regiment lit the oil lamp in accordance with traditions, marking the formal inauguration.

It was Lieutenant General Ratnayaka himself who laid the cornerstone for construction of this house several months ago when he was the Chief of Staff and Chairman, Army Athletics Association with the motive of stimulating Army athletes and sportsmen to do better in the field of athletics and sports.

Members of the Maha Sangha chanted Seth Pirith and invoked blessings on the project.
