New Director Media Cum Military Spokesman Assumes Office

Brigadier Sumith Atapattu of Mechanized Infantry Regiment assumed office on Thursday (21) as the new Director of Media at the Army Headquarters and the Military Spokesman during a simple ceremony at the Directorate of Media office in Colombo 4.

Brigadier Sumith Atapattu during his Army career of thirty-two years after he was enlisted to the Sri Lanka Army (Regular Force) on 17 March 1986, has to-date held a number of Command and Staff appointments, including those in the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment and the Mechanized Infantry Regiment (MIR).

Brigadier Sumith Atapattu also served as the Staff Officer 11 earlier in the Directorate of Media when he was in the rank of Major. He was the first Staff Officer at the Directorate of Media to have been appointed as the Director Media cum Military Spokesman.

Brigadier Atapattu, to his credit has been serving as the General Officer Commanding, 58 Division in Boossa, Galle before he was appointed as the Director Media. He has also served as the MIR Brigade Commander and had the opportunity of working as the Commandant in the Infantry Training Centre, Minneriya. He received his Presidential Commission on 12 December 1987.

He succeeds Major General Roshan Seneviratne who is to assume office as the General Officer Commanding of the 51 Division under the Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna.

He is married to Mrs Fedrika Atapattu and blessed with three children.
