New Adjutant General Maj Gen Hathurusinghe Takes Office

Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe assumed office as the new Adjutant General at Army Headquarters on Thursday (16) during a brief ceremony.

Buddhist religious observances, performed by Ven Daranagama Kusaladhamma Nayaka Thero of Sri Sambodhi Viharaya and members of the Maha Sangha, invoked blessings on the new appointment after Major General Hathurusinghe, made offerings to the Buddha.

Amidst Seth Pirith, the new Adjutant General Major General Hathurusinghe afterwards placed his signature in an official document to signify the acceptance of the new office. Lighting of the traditional oil lamp, marked the inauguration of the day’s proceedings.  

Major General Hathurusinghe who just relinquished his appointment as Commander, Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna after serving continuously for four years in the peninsula, won hearts and minds of the Jaffna people during his tenure and rendered an indelible service in the field of reconciliation, reconstruction, resettlement, rehabilitation and many other welfare and development projects.   

Having joined the Army on 19th September 1980 as an officer cadet, he received his basic military training at Officers’ Training Academy in Madras. On completion of training, he was commissioned to the rank of Second Lieutenant in the Sri Lanka Artillery on 18th July 1981.

In the year 2010 Gusi Foundation in Manila awarded him the Gusi Peace Award in recognition of his dedicated commitment for humanitarian de-mining, resettlement, rehabilitation and other community services in the peninsula.

Several senior officers and well-wishers were associated with today’s inauguration of his office.
