New 54 Division’s GOC Begins Duties

Major General Darshana Wijesekara assumed duties as the 11th General Officer Commanding of the 54 Division on Wednesday (28) at the Divisional Headquarters in Mannar.

At the outset, the incoming GOC reviewed the Guard Turnout presented by 7 VIR troops on his arrival at the Headquarters premises and took the salute in the pursuant Guard of Honor. Afterwards, the GOC was welcomed by Colonel General Staff and all senior officers of the 54 Division and ushered him to his office. Amid chanting of ‘Seth Pirith’ by Buddhist monks, the new GOC left his signature in an official document and signified the acceptance of the new office.

In line with formalities, the GOC planted a sapling, prior to the troop address and expressed his vision during the officers’ address at the conference that followed.

Major General Darshana Wijesekara, prior to this new appointment served as the Deputy Commandant at DSCSC Batalanda.

Senior officers and other ranks attended the event in accordance with COVID-19 health guidelines.

The newly-appointed General Officer Commanding Major General Darshana Wijesekara succeeded Major General Jayanath Bandara who has now been appointed as Director General Infantry at the Army Headquarters.
