A packed audience of near five thousand, including HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksa and First Lady Mrs Shiranthi Rajapaksa, were awestruck Sunday (30) evening by soothing and mellifluous music of Maestro Pandith W.D. Amaradeva whose ‘Sannaliyane’ music fiesta, organized by the Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU), interpreted and articulated the true meaning of the cyclic nature of the Sansara, dramatized by unmatched artistes.
Representing four generations of vocalists to the tune of meticulous choreographic features, directed by the veteran Channa and Upuli Wijewardene, the ‘Sannaliyane’ was staged as a tribute to Maestro Amaradeva and to harness public support for welfare of all disable War Heroes and affected families of all Army War Heroes.
With music, directed by Dr Rohana Weerasinghe, the composer, Bandara Eheliyagoda scripted the entire project and Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army, together with Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, President, ASVU, intently supervised and supported it during rehearsals. In what was considered unprecedented, a record ensemble of 100 Army musicians, provided meticulously attuned rhythmic beats to all Amaradeva’s hits that spoke of the birth, childhood, youth, maturing, death and once again, the re-birth.
The ASVU’s ‘Brave Hearts’ project of the year, graced by religious dignitaries, HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksa, First Lady Mrs Shiranthi Rajapaksa, Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence and Urban Development, Mrs Ioma Rajapaksa, Chairperson, Ministry of Defence Seva Vanitha Unit, Navy and Air Force Commanders, Inspector General of the Police, Diplomats, attracted more than 28 most popular vocalists of four generations who lent their well-known voices to immortal hits of Pandith W.D Amaradewa.
The entertaining feature, themed ‘Sannaliyane’ as a token of tribute to the country’s maestro, Pandith W.D Amaradeva, rent the air with awe-inspiring and rhythmic beats as exceptionally skilled Channa’s dancers mimed to hits, like ‘Mindada Heesara’, ‘Kolomthota’, ‘Pipuna Kusuma’, ‘Sasara Wasanathuru’, ‘Ipida Mere’, etc.
Pandith Amaradeva, Sanath Nandasiri, Nanda Malini, Kolithabhanu Dissanayake, Edward Jayakody, Charitha Priyadharshani, Samantha Perera, Pradeepa Dharmadasa, Amarasiri Peiris, Nirosha Virajini, Subani Amaradeva, Bandula Wijeweera, Jagath Wickremasinghe, Luxman Wijesekara, Amarasiri Peiris, Deepika Priyadarshani, Janaka Wickremasinghe, Asanka Liyanarachchi, Rodney Warnakula, Nelu Adikari, Krishantha Erandaka, Ranjan Amaradewa, Dayasiri Jayasekera, Ranaviru Real Stars, Demiyan Fernando, Major Saliya Jayawardene and Corporal Lalith Wickremanayake, added colour to the musical extravaganza that lasted nearly for two hours amidst roaring applause of the audience.
Towards the end of the event, Maestro W.D Amaradeva received a standing ovation as HE the President, together with the Secretary Defence, Commander of the Army, got on to the stage to felicitate the country’s most revered musician by presenting a memento plus a cash gift of Rs 1.5 million. Mrs Wimala Amaradeva at the same time was awarded another gift containing jewellery to the value of Rs 2 lakhs by First Lady Mrs Shiranthi Rajapaksa, flanked by Mrs Ioma Rajapaksa, Chairperson, Ministry of Defence and Urban Development, Seva Vanitha Unit and Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, President, Army Seva Vanitha Unit.
Separate citations, attributed to the award of those laurels to both Pandith Amaradeva and Mrs Wimala Amaradeva were first read out as the house remained with a pin-drop silence in honour of Maestro Amaradeva. (See citations below)
Funds of the ASVU project are exclusively channeled for construction of wellness resorts, “Abimansala” for dependent War Heroes, medical and rehabilitating needs of permanently disable War Heroes, welfare of the families of fallen and disable War Heroes, etc.
