The entire Mullaittivu district, the former stronghold of Tiger separatists, is fast entering the road to recovery, restructure and redevelopment with the support of Army troops, engaged in a multitude of public welfare projects.
622 Brigade Headquarters recently coordinated a distribution of mosquito nets among 69 families in jungle-infested Helambawewa village. The mosquito nets were provided by the Trincomalee Malaria Control Campaign to the Army by the Department of Health.
In early June, 9 (V) Sri Lanka Light Infantry troops serving the 621 Brigade renovated and restored the sermon hall (Dharma Shala) at Monerawewa Buddhist Temple in the Gajabapura Grama Niladhari sector. Similarly, a group of soldiers repaired the Bo Maluwa (Upper Layer) of the Veherakanda Buddhist Temple in the Vahalkada Grama Niladhari sector within a matter of 6 days.
In the meantime, 9 (V) SLLI troops built Ranamayura pre-school students received school accessories as donations during a brief ceremony at Monerawewa Temple on Thursday (14). The formal opening of the school also took place at the same occasion.
On account of Poson Full Moon Poya day, troops serving the 623 Brigade area organized a Sil campaign at Veheratenna Buddhist Temple at Buddangala Grama Niladhari sector. A gift parcel containing dry food rations was also distributed among all those who visited the temple on that day, following the support given by Mr Ranjit Weeraratne and Mr Janaka Pushpakumara of Dankotuwa and Sandalankawa.
In another welfare project, troops serving the 621 Brigade area built two new toilets at Ehetugaswewa Vidyalaya and Sampathnuwara Maha Vidyalaya. Those sanitary facilities, built by Army troops were officially handed over to respective Principals by 621 Brigade Commander. Each lavatory was worth about Rs. 60,000/=.
Twenty youngsters, selected from 622 Brigade area in Janakapura, Welioya participated in a training workshop for Personality Development with the support of Sri Lanka Maha Bodhi Society and Yoshida Foundation. All attendees in the workshop received certificates.
