1 Battalion Sri Lanka Signal Corps (SLSC) footballers, beating Sri Lanka Army Service Corps (SLASC) counterparts carried away the Mullaittivu Championship Challenge Trophy in the recently-concluded football tournament, organized by the 591 Brigade Headquarters in the 59 Division.
30 football teams from all the formations serving the Security Force Headquarters - Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT) initially took part in the tournament during separate tussles at two different playgrounds in Alampil area beginning March (15).
In the semi-finals, eight teams, including 25 Battalion Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG), 1 Battalion SLSC, 6 Battalion Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME), 24 Battalion Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR), 18 Battalion Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR), 11 Battalion Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE) , 5 Battalion SLSC and 6 Battalion SLASC competed for supremacy.
For the final encounter 1 Battalion SLSC fought against 24 Battalion SLSR and the 1 Battalion SLSC eventually took on 18 Battalion VIR and 6 Battalion SLASC on the road to supremacy. However, the most thrilling and excited final round took place between 1 Battalion SLSC and 6 Battalion SLASC at Alampil Maha Vidyalaya playgrounds, finally bringing win to the 1 Battalion SLSC (2-1).
Towards the end of the tournament, an exhibition football tournament that got underway at Alampil Maha Vidyalaya grounds between Vemmalei football team and Alampil football team, comprised of famous civil sector footballers, drew huge crowds and added excitement.
Major General L.B.R Mark, Commander, SFHQ-MLT attended the final event, together with Mr N. Wedanayagam, District Secretary for Mullaittivu, General Officers Commanding of respective Divisions, Brigade Commanders, Unit Commanders and other invitees.
The Chief Guest gave away trophies and certificates to the winning teams and those who excelled in the tournament.
