More ‘Virusara’ Privilege Cards Awarded to War Heroes & Their Families

One more round of the distribution of the 'Virusara' Privilege Card which provides tangible discounts on commercial products, essentials and facilities in state and private sector services got underway at Ganemulla, Commando Regiment premises on Friday (9).

State Minister of Defence Hon. Ruwan Wijewardene, the conceptual architect of the 'Virusara' Privilege Card graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Secretary Defence Eng Karunasena Hettiarachchi, Mr. A.P.G Kithsiri, Secretary to the Defence State Ministry, Mrs Anoma Fonseka, Chairperson, Ranaviru Seva Authority, Senior officers representing Tri-service Commanders, Senior Police and Civil Security Department representatives, United National Party organizer for Mahara, Officials of the Ministry of Defence, representatives of private companies and several others were among the distinguished invitees to the occasion.

Retired and serving War Heroes, disable War Heroes and War Hero families of the Tri-services, Police and Civil Security Department who have served more than 20 years in operational areas, during the ceremony received 1800 more 'Virusara' Privilege Cards.

In addition, deeds to six plots of lands, 60 scholarships and building materials were also distributed among most needed War Heroes or their next of kin during the same occasion, courtesy different donors.

Lighting of the traditional oil lamp and observance of a two-minute silence in memory of all fallen War Heroes kicked off the day’s proceedings.

Colonel of the Regiment, Commando Regiment Major General Ralph Nugera afterwards warmly welcomed the gathering to the occasion.

Mrs Anoma Fonseka, Chairperson, Ranaviru Seva Authority at the outset in her introductory speech mapped out the noble objectives behind the implementation of the 'Virusara' Privilege Card project.

Eng Karunasena Hettiarachchi in his address to the occasion appealed War Heroes not to be misled by false propaganda gimmicks of interested elements since the government has done a lot of welfare work for the benefit of War Heroes after HE the President Maithripala Sirisena took office. Hon. State Minister of Defence, Ruwan Wijewardene making a brief speech to the occasion assured that as alleged by some quarters, the government would not compromise national security under any circumstances.

The distribution of 17 privilege cards symbolically by the Minister Wijewardene followed the distribution of the remainder by other distinguished guests.

The vote of thanks raised by a 'Virusara' Privilege Card recipient Commando drew the day’s programme to an end.

Major General Channa Goonetilleke, Deputy Chief of Staff on behalf of the Commander of the Army attended the ceremony.
