One more segment of the brave officers and soldiers, belonging to the Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC) was decorated on Friday (20) for their exceptional roles during humanitarian operations in the North and East before LTTE terrorism was wiped out.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces inaugurated the award of the same ‘North-East Humanitarian Operation Medal’ on 14th December 2010 where a representative 1000 War Heroes of the tri-services and the Police received this Medal at the initial stage. At that inaugural ceremony Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army received the first Medal on behalf of the Sri Lanka Army. After the main ceremony, award of this Medal has been continuing at all regimental levels in view of the high numbers of deserving recipients.
Today’s ceremony at SLAC Regimental Headquarters, Rock House, Muttwal recognizes valour and gallantry, displayed by those SLAC War Heroes during their dedicated commitment in the North and East. Major General U. A. B. Medawela, Director General General Staff at Army Headquarters graced the award ceremony as the Chief Guest.
SLAC Centre Commandant Brigadier I. P. Ranasinghe received the Chief Guest at the main entrance to the auditorium. The day’s itinerary began to roll afterwards with the Army song renting the air. Going down the memory lane, a two-minute silence venerated all the fallen War Heroes next as it is customary in all the military ceremonies.
Giving reasons, attributable to the award of this prestigious Medal to those SLAC War Heroes, the Adjutant in the SLAC Regiment afterwards presented the citation to the audience as the occasion was turning more dignified.
As all eyes remained glued to the main platform, Major General Medawela was thereafter invited to pin the first segment of Medals to 24 SLAC Officers and Soldiers who rendered a unique service during the North and East humanitarian operations.
SLAC Centre Commandant, Division Commanders and all SLAC Commanding officers later on followed suit and pinned those Medals on the remainder as the day’s agenda was coming to a close. Two hundred SLAC War Heroes in total received those Medals on this occasion.
