More cultivable lands in Jaffna released after de-mining

One more large stretch of the agricultural land hitherto remained abandoned in Thanankilappu area in Jaffna because of imminent danger posed by unearthed landmines turned arable once again after it was cleared of mines by the Engineers Regiment of the Sri Lanka Army.

Engineer troops detected and de-fused 77 live mines in the stretch after clearing a total area of some 42, 5 5122 square meters. During the arduous and meticulously dangerous exercise, two soldiers received injuries and were admitted to hospital for treatment.

Chavakachcheri Assistant Divisional Secretary on behalf of the original farming community of those lands formally accepted the cleared land during a brief ceremony from Colonel ALDM Gunasekara, Commander 521Brigade

Minutes after the hand-over of those lands at Thanankilappu on Friday (21) smiling farmers were seen inching towards their lands with new bouts of hard work.

The programme on Humanitarian De-mining in this area started in September 2004 and ended on 22 July 2005.
