The Sinhala and Tamil New Year festival of the 551 Brigade of the 55 Division under the Security Force Headquarters-Jaffna (SFHQ-J) got underway at the Nelliadi Central College grounds on Saturday (18) on a grand scale.
Sponsored by Nestomalt and Unilever (Pvt) Ltd and covered by Wasantham TV channel, the full-day event offered pride of place to traditional games and other community-oriented collective sports and competitions.
More than 1500 Tamil civilians, together with Army personnel of the 551 Brigade and the 55 Division enthusiastically participated in the New Year celebrations on Saturday (18).
Ms Vijayalatha Maheshwaran, Member of Parliament (MP) for Jaffna District took part in the celebration as the Chief Guest. Gifts were also given away to the winners in different competitions.
The event was organized on the instructions of the 55 Division General Officer Commanding with the coordination done by 551 Brigade Headquarters of the SFHQ-J.
