Sponsorship provided by a retired Senior Army Officer and his associates in the US enabled troops of the 23 Vijayabhau Infantry Regiment of the 642 Brigade of the 64 Division under the Security Force HQ-Mullaittivu to distribute 15 wheelchairs among physically-handicapped civilians in Mullaittivu areas on Tuesday (17).
Major General Sisira Pilapitiya, Commander, Security Forces-Mullaittivu inaugurated the project by carrying a wheelchair and a dry ration pack symbolically to the doorsteps of one beneficiary while troops continued the project in the same manner distributing the remaining 14 wheelchairs.
The humanitarian project was initiated by US-based retired Major General R Rathnasingham and a group of his friends.
The beneficiaries were selected with the support of respective Grama Niladari (state officials) in different administrative divisions.
