MIR Soldiers Renovate & Complete Late UN Peacekeeper’s House

Fellow-Mechanized Infantry Regiment (MIR) Officers and soldiers, concerned about the family members of late Sergeant S.S Wijekumara who sacrificed his life recently while serving the UN Mission in Mali, took steps to renovate and refurbish his partly-built home at Polpithigama on the instructions of Brigadier Sumith Atapattu, Colonel of the Regiment, MIR and Director Media at the Army Headquarters.

Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army on being informed instructed the Army Seva Vanitha Unit and the Directorate of Veterans’ Affairs to provide all possible assistance to make the project a success in coordination with the MIR Regimental Headquarters.

MIR troops enthusiastically volunteered and provided their technical expertise for renovation of the partly-built house where the widow with his two daughters were living at the time the MIR Headquarters took the initiative in this regard after evaluating the need for a fully renovated house for the family before the three-month remembrance ‘Pinkama’ (commemoration) takes place in a few weeks.

Brigadier Sumith Atapattu, together with the MIR Centre Commandant, Colonel S.J Priyadarshana, several Senior Officers, Regimental Sergeants and Other Ranks on Saturday (20) went to Polpithigama and formally vested the renovated house in late Sergeant’s family during a very simple ceremony in the presence of family members and relatives.

The day’s Chief Guest symbolically handed over the key of the renovated house to the widow and cut a ribbon before the family and visitors entered the renovated house. latest Nike release | Patike
