MIR Seva Vanitha Recollects War Hero Memories &;amp; Supports Their Families with Schols &;amp; New Year Gift Parcels


The much-awaited combined Ranaviru Upahaara (War Hero Tribute) Ceremony and the Ranaviru Commemoration Ceremony, organized every year by the Mechanized Infantry Regiment's (MIR) Seva Vanitha Unit was held on a grand scale  at the Defence Service College auditorium on Saturday (4) under the aegis of Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva, Commander of the Army and Mrs Nayana De Silva, President, Army Seva Vanitha Unit as the Chief Guest at the invitation of Mrs Dhammika Hathurusinghe, Chairperson, MIR Seva Vanitha Unit.

The day's itinerary got underway with the distribution of 15 scholarships, each worth Rs 12,000/= among students from families of fallen War Heroes and disable War Heroes. Following the invitation of Mrs Hathurusinghe, the chief guest, Mrs Nayana De Silva gave away those scholarships to the students, many of who had been accompanied to the occasion by their mothers.

To coincide with the forthcoming dawn of Sinhala and Tamil New Year period, MIR Seva Vanitha Unit had also organized the distribution of a large stock of dry ration packets, containing most essential dry foods among families of MIR War Heroes. At the kind invitation of Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Colonel of the Regiment, MIR, the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva joined the distribution of a segment of those gift parcels. Major General Hathurusinghe afterwards was invited to hand those New Year gift parcels to the rest of the selected War Hero families.

MIR Seva Vanitha Unit has been in the practice of launching this multifaceted welfare project during the past few years in order to salute the memory of fallen MIR War Heroes and support their families, and by April this year, they have reached nearly a thousand of students in affected War Hero families with award of scholarships as incentives for continuation of their higher studies. In addition, those ladies in the MIR Seva Vanitha Unit are continuing to support the projects for War Hero house constructions, medical assistance, emergency reliefs, etc.

A gathering of MIR Seva Vanitha Unit ladies, Regimental Seva Vanitha Unit executive members, parents, children and senior Army officers watched the proceedings on Saturday (4) at the Defence Service College.
