THE FIRST-EVER Mobile Relief Service Programme, designed to resolve or redress grievances among those ex-combatants still under rehabilitation and civilians, now re-integrated and are leading ordinary civil life after rehabilitation process, took place in Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Vavuniya areas during July 10 - 12.
This novel mobile approach, implemented by Bureau of the Commissioner General of Rehabilitation, on a concept initiated by Minister of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms, served some 3000 rehabilitated inhabitants and 8000 plus former LTTE combatants still undergoing rehabilitation at state sponsored centres during those three days.
The service at Kilinochchi St. Theresa’s School attracted a huge crowd of resettled civilians who presented a barrage of inquiries and questions of different nature to the authorities at the mobile service. Many of those civilians wanted to know the exact dates of release of their loved ones (ex-combatants) after the rehabilitation process is over. Some others also came in search of new livelihoods in the state or private sector since they remain unemployed.
The mobile service also paid compensations to a total of 25 people in Jaffna and Vavuniya over loss of their spouses and parents, following funds released by Ministry of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms.
Ministers Dew Gunasekara, Milroy Fernando, Deputy Minister Vijithamuni Soysa, Secretary to Ministry of Rehabilitation Mr A. Dissanayake, Commissioner General of Rehabilitation Brigadier Sudantha Ranasinghe and several other Ministry officials were associated with this mobile service during three days.
