Karate, the Japanese self defence system with use of hands and feet as weapons which has gained popularity across the country, has made great strides in the Army too, thanks to the efforts of the Army Karate Association.
The Inter Regiment Karate Tournament of the Army, held early this week, was competed by a total of 356 players from 20 Regiments for 15 challenging trophies, including Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps.
Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police (SLCMP) Regiment players showing their unmatched skills in the art of defence scored the highest number of Black Belts (47), Brown Belts (25) and Colour Belts (28) and became men’s Champions, securing 100 in overall marks against their rivals. Sri Lanka National Guard and Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment players emerged 1st Runners up and the 2nd Runners up respectively.
SLCMP Lance Corporal A.V.J Jayasinghe shone as the Grand Champion (Men) while his fellow-workmate, Staff Sergeant T.G.P.K Edirisinghe in the SLCMP was adjudged the Best Player Black Belt (Men) category. Similarly, both trophies for the Champions in Brown Belt (Men) and Best Player Brown Belt (Men) went to the SLCMP players.
Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps became Women Champions in the tournament.
Major General A.L.R Wijethunga, Deputy Chief of Staff at the invitation of Major General E.K.J.K Wijayasiri, Chairman, Army Karate Association graced the final sessions as the Chief Guest and gave away trophies to the winners.
