Military Doctor’s Heroic Act Saves Lives in Nedimala Fire Incident

In the early hours on 18th February 2025, an extraordinary act of bravery and medical expertise unfolded when a devastating fire broke out in a residence opposite the hose of Major (Dr) P.J Ramukkana at Nedimala, Dehiwala.

The blaze endangered the lives of an elderly gentleman and his daughter, leaving the daughter with severe second and third-degree burns causing the father to suffer a cardiac arrest due to exposure to smoke and flames.

Without hesitation, Army Medical Officer specializing in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at the Army Hospital, Colombo, rushed to the scene. Demonstrating his extensive expertise in critical care medicine, he immediately commenced cardiac massage and administered mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, successfully reviving the elderly man before paramedics arrived. The patient was then transported via ambulance to Colombo South Teaching Hospital, Kalubowila, for further medical treatment.

His quick and decisive intervention was instrumental in saving the lives of the victims and preventing further complications.

The incident highlights not only the importance of prompt medical response in emergencies but also the unwavering commitment of Army medical professionals to serving both in and out of uniform.
