MIC Regimental Headquarters at Karandeniya Moves Into New Building Complex

Sri Lanka Army Military Intelligence Corps (MIC) Regimental Headquarters at Karandeniya, turned a new chapter in MIC’s lifespan of more than 30 years on Friday (31) when it moved into a newly-constructed administrative complex and simultaneously honoured its fallen War Heroes with erection of their own new war memorial in the premises.

Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence and Urban Development as the Chief Guest for the inaugural ceremony, together with the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, graced the occasion at the invitation of Major General S.A.P.P Samarasinghe, Colonel of the Regiment, MIC and Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force and Major General Udaya Perera, Director General MIC.

MIC in the Army which has hitherto performed a commendable service to the country, particularly during decades-long threats for separation, came into being as an organized regiment, following initiatives, taken by Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army when he himself was a senior officer in the MIC, a few years ago. However, its origins were founded in 1981 at Jaffna along with separatist threats, looming large during that period.

Mr Rajapaksa earlier in 2011, considering the extent of invaluable service, being performed by the MIC, assisted in finding the current state land at Karandeniya, spanning over 90 acres.

A drive past Guard Turn Out presented arms to the Chief Guest on arrival before a Guard of Honour at the new parade ground saluted Mr Rajapaksa after he was warmly received by the Commander of the Army, Colonel of the MIC Regiment and senior officers. Soon after a brief address to the occasion by the Chief Guest at the parade square, the moment for the day’s highlight reached.

Religious observances, rites and rituals associated with a typical opening ceremony, got underway as the auspicious minute for inauguration of the main Hqrs building of the MIC reached. Mr Rajapaksa after unveiling a plaque, cut a ribbon and warmed the new complex which houses all administrative wings of the MIC.

Minutes after that, the distinguished gathering, headed by Mr Rajapaksa, walked to the new MIC War Memorial nearby that symbolizes the memories of all fallen MIC War Heroes. Mr Rajapaksa after unveiling the new state of the art monument paid his respect by placing a floral wreath at the foot of it, giving due recognition to their sacrifices.

Towards the culmination of the day’s programme, Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayaka in appreciation of Mr Rajapaksa’s visit to the place, presented a memento to him. A similar souvenir was awarded by Major General S.A.P.P Samarasinghe on behalf of all in the MIC at the same occasion.

Just a couple of weeks ago, the Commander of the Army, opened the new MIC parade square and inaugurated construction work of the proposed MIC School, Banquet Hall and a Club for rest and recreation for all ranks.

Around the same time, a fortress-type new entry archway to the parade ground was also unveiled by the Commander.

Mrs Ioma Rajapaksa, Chairperson, MoD Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch, Chief of Staff, Major General Chrishanta de Silva, Deputy Chief of Staff, Major General E.P. de Z Abeysekara, Adjutant General, Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe and a host of senior officers were present at the occasion.
