It has been 15 years since the defeat of the LTTE, a group that fought to create a separate state in Sri Lanka. This victory is significant for all Sri Lankans, as it ended terrorism that had threatened the nation's sovereignty and territorial integrity for over three decades. With great pride, I issue this message on the occasion of "Victory Day," commemorating the end of terrorism that caused immense suffering and brought peace to the people.
The government undertook various measures to rescue the Sri Lankan people from the clutches of terrorism. Despite numerous peace talks and ceasefire agreements, the LTTE remained steadfast in its goal to create the state of Eelam. The Sri Lanka Armed Forces committed to thwarting these LTTE objectives to protect the nation. A humanitarian operation was launched to rescue those affected by the LTTE’s inhuman acts, such as the closure of the Mavil Aru sluice, which cut off water supplies to people and farmlands. This operation successfully freed the eastern region from terrorist control, marking a significant milestone in defeating the LTTE.
Following the liberation of the East, the humanitarian operation continued in the Wanni region. This operation, lasting almost two years, culminated in the complete liberation of the country from terrorism by 19 May 2009. The historic victory freed over 300,000 people held as human shields by the terrorists, setting a world record for a rescue operation. After the defeat of terrorism, all Sri Lankans gained the opportunity to live freely. This victory was the collective effort of everyone in the country and we gratefully remember the contributions of the diplomatic leadership, Tri-Forces Commanders and heroic soldiers at all levels. On this historic day, we honour all the War Heroes who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of the motherland and those who are undergoing treatments. I also wish a speedy recovery to the War Heroes still undergoing treatment.
The Sri Lanka Army, which secured the country’s safety, continues to play a major role in national development and public welfare, even in the face of natural disasters and crises. The Army has also been instrumental in addressing recent social and political challenges. We remember the heroic War Heroes who, with patience and discipline, ensured the people of Sri Lanka could live in freedom. The primary duty of the Sri Lankan Army is to safeguard the country’s democratic structure, suppress threats to sovereignty and territorial integrity, and establish national security.
At this moment of celebrating the 15th Victory Day, I would like to recall that further necessary measures will be taken for the welfare of soldiers, the "Protectors of the Nation", the retired soldiers, their families, as well as the civil staff. At this time, I would like to mention that it is our responsibility to end the war and secure the motherland. It is essential to fulfil the role assigned to us in protecting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the motherland. I remind you again that you must fulfil your responsibilities in a proper manner while preserving the honour, reputation and image of the Army.
May the triple gem bless you!
