Memory of Military Intelligence Corps Refreshed in Fitting Tribute Ceremony at its Hqrs


The memory of 66 fallen members of the Military Intelligence Corps (MIC) of the Sri Lanka Army, who rendered a yeoman silent service during the humanitarian operations while operating as an indispensable unit, was refreshed and venerated on Friday (23) at a fitting tribute and commemorative ceremony that got underway at the MIC Regimental Headquarters, Karandeniya, headed by Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army at the invitation of the MIC Colonel Commandant, Major General Jagath Alwis.

The MIC ' Ranaviru Upahara Ulela' (War Hero Tribute Ceremony) and the simultaneous commemorative event, coincided with the MIC Regimental Day where floral tributes were made at the MIC monument in the premises in order to recall the memories of 66 fallen MIC War Heroes. Placing of floral wreaths began with the day's Chief Guest, Commander of the Army and all other senior officers and close family members of the fallen, followed suit then. Mothers, spouses, children and close relatives were seen bursting into tears as they lined up to pay respect to their fallen War Heroes as names were announced by the organizers.

After the brief and solemn ceremony, the Commander was invited to open a newly-built residential quarter for Officers in the compound, a long-felt need in the MIC regimental headquarters. Accompanied by senior officers, the Commander cut a ribbon and vested it in Officers. Lieutenant General (retd) Lionel Balagalle, former Commander of the Army, Major General (retd) Kapila Hendavitharana, formerly of the Ministry of Defence, Major General Prasad Samarasinghe, Chief of Staff and a gathering of retired and serving officers were present at the ceremonies.

The second segment of the day's programme in the evening got to a start with a tribute ceremony where the MIC Seva Vanitha Unit (SVU) with sponsorships, received from Mobitel and other donors,  awarded cash incentives, scholarships, school accessories, etc  to children of fallen and disable War Heroes and their families. Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, President, Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU) attended the MIC SVU-organized ceremony where nearly 100 children of MIC were gifted financially or in kind by way of school accessories, gift vouchers, cash donations, scholarships, etc.
