Memories of Fallen SLE War Heroes Refreshed on SLE's 69th Anniversary Day

The Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE) on Tuesday (10) marked its 69th Anniversary, the founding day giving greater importance to the commemoration of fallen War Heroes of the SLE Regiment.

Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers and Chief of Staff, Major General Jagath Gunawardena as the Chief Guest for the anniversary event arrived at the Regimental Centre premises in Panagoda to be welcomed by the Centre Commandant, Brigadier Mangala Mayadunna. A colourful Guard Turnout at the entrance greeted the day's Chief Guest before he was accompanied to the SLE War Heroes' monument. The Chief Guest and others stood vigil as the National Anthem, Army song and the Engineers' song rent the air, symbolizing the significance of the day before Major General Jagath Gunawardena lit the eternal lamp on the monument.

Religious observances and a two-minute silence on the occasion added more dignity and significance to the memory of departed ones. Giving the true interpretation to their invaluable sacrifices, a senior Officer after a while venerated their memory by narrating the saga of their heroism and bravery as the gathering remained solemn and quiet. Amid melancholic melodies of bag pipers, the floral wreaths were then laid bringing that segment to end before a customary Guard of Honour saluted the day's Chief Guest in accordance with military formalities.

A display of ‘Rana Bera’ beating by a large bevy of Army drummers took everyone down the memory before the Last Post was sounded, signaling that those war heroes had gone to eternal rest on behalf of the country as everyone stood at attention again. Senior Officers, Officers and Other Ranks attended the day's memorial event, adhering to health safety guidelines and social distancing practices.
