Mammoth Beach Cleaning in Point Pedro Joined by More than 500 Civilians

With a view to creating an attitudinal awakening of the general public and making them understand the value of coastal and marine resources, 551 Infantry Brigade troops of the 55 Infantry Division of the SFHQ-Jaffna launched a beach cleaning programme in the coastal areas of Munai, Point Pedro, Supermadam and Sakkotai on Thursday (17 March).

The project, kicked off under the guidance of Major General Prasanna Gunaratne, General Officer Commanding - 55 Infantry Division and Brigadier Jude Kariyakarawana, Commander - 551 Infantry Brigade closely supervised it. It was also meant to attract community contribution and their participation in environmental concerns including beach clean-up efforts.

Accordingly, 4 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment and 16 (V) Sri Lanka Light Infantry troops under the 551 Infantry Brigade in coordination with Point Pedro Divisional Secretary's office, Point Pedro Urban Council, Department of Coast Conservation, Coastal Resource Management, Point Pedro Police officials and Sri Lanka Navy joined hands together for this beach clearing project.

More than 500 local civilians too attended the event, including Rev Fr Antony Fernando Bennet, Mr Navaratnarajah, Chairman Point Pedro Urban Council, Mr Alvaipillai Siri, Divisional Secretary for Point Pedro, Representatives from the Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management, and Chairmen of local fishing societies.
