Major T.N. Muthaliff falls victim to LTTE gunmen

Major T. N. Muthaliff RWP, Commanding Officer, Sri Lanka Army Military Intelligence Corps (MIC) was one of the most senior officers of the MIC to fall prey to LTTE bullets in Colombo on Tuesday (31 May 2005) morning in broad daylight while he was on his way to work.

Motorbike-riding LTTE gunmen neared Major Muthaliff's official vehicle and opened fire at close range as the vehicle slowed down before traffic lights on the highway at Polhengoda, Colombo.

Major Muthaliff (O/60727), who has been serving as Commanding Officer, First Regiment Sri Lanka Military Intelligence Corps since November 2004, has also worked as the General Staff Officer (GSO) 111 (Intelligence) and GSO I at Vavuniya between 1992-1994 and 2000 –2001 respectively.

Enlisted to the Army on 02 June 1986, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 05th Gemunu Watch on 22.1 1987. After he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, Lt Muthaliff was posted to the Military Intelligence Corps in June 1990. Captain Muthaliff subsequent to his promotion as Captain in 1992 served as GSO III at Army Headquarters and was promoted to the rank of Major on 02nd June 1995. Major Muthaliff after a brief service as Officer Commanding in the MIC training section served as Group Commander Intelligence Security Group at Jaffna for about three and half years.

Upon his return to Colombo in December 1997, he continued to serve as Group Commander at the Directorate of Military Intelligence in Colombo for about three years. On 01st September 2000 he was posted to Vavuniya as GSO I (Intelligence) before he was made the Commanding Officer, First Regiment Sri Lanka Military Intelligence Corps on 2nd November 2004.

Major Muthaliff during his career as a very capable Officer has successfully followed several training courses both here and abroad including International Officers Intelligence (USA), South Asia Peace Keeping Operations Exercise (Hawaii), Junior Command Course (India), Counter Insurgency Intelligence Course (Bangladesh) and Intelligence Staff Officer Course in India.

In appreciation of his service commitment, he was decorated with the Rana Wickrama Padakkama (RWP). Major Muthaliff, married to Mrs. Kumudini Amarasinghe Muthaliff, who is also a serving Army Officer leaves behind her and their two children, Sara (09) and Marlik (04).
