Major General Vikum Liyanage of Gajaba Regiment (GR) assumed duties as the 10th Commander of the Security Forces - West at the office in the SFHQ-West at Panagoda on Tuesday (20).
The newly-appointed Commander, Security Forces- West (SFHQ-West) was warmly welcomed by Staff Officers and honoured in a Guard Turnout, presented by 12 Gajaba Regiment (12 GR) troops on arrival at the compound. Afterwards, he was awarded the formal highest salute, Guard of Honour in the parade ground, presented by GR troops.
After a while, Major General Vikum Liyanage placed his signature in the first official document to mark his assumption of office, amidst chanting of 'Seth Pirith' by members of Buddhist monks in the presence of a few senior officers. He was also invited to plant a sapling as a gesture of memory in the premises.
An All Rank tea and a formal address to the Officers and Other Ranks after a few minutes culminated the day's proceedings. Officers of the SFHQ-West, General Officers Commanding and Brigade Commanders, Directors, Commanding Officers and Other Ranks of the SF HQ-West participated in the office-warming ceremony and related features.
Major General Vikum Liyanage, prior to this new appointment was the General Officer Commanding, 21 Division of the SFHW-Wanni. Major General Vikum Liyanage succeeded Major General Wasantha Abrew who just retired from the Army.
