Major General Sanjaya Wanasinghe Receives Insignia from the Commander

Just promoted Major General Sanjaya Wanasinghe, Director General, Directorate of Overseas Operations this afternoon (16) had the rare privilege of receiving his new rank insignia from none other than his chief, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army during an audience he has had at the Commander’s office at the Army Headquarters in Sri Jayawardenepura.

After congratulating him on his promotion and handing over the symbolic sword that represents the power and authority of a Major General, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva reminded him of the unique and unprecedented continuing saga that surrounds his elevation to the rank of Major General while his own father, himself is a much-respected retired General in the country. Extending best wishes, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva pinned Major General Sanjaya Wanasinghe's new insignia on the epaulettes.

Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva on the same occasion reminded him of the importance of elevating to the rank of a two-star General in the organization and how such promotions would augur well in the command and administration. He underlined the significance of being an exemplary and admired personage while holding this authority and office after elevation to this rank.

Major General Sanjaya Wanasinghe of the Sri Lanka Artillery Regiment made history having received commissions as a Second Lieutenant in the Army whilst his father, General Hamilton Wanasinghe, the 11th Commander of the Army (1988-1991) was in office who was also afterwards promoted as the country-produced first 4 Star General.

Prior to being appointed as the Director, Overseas Operations in the Army, Major General Sanjaya Wanasinghe has held various portfolios in the Army’s hierarchical order, inclusive of Colonel General Staff, 59 Division, Commander, 682 Brigade and Commander, 144 Brigade, etc. During the Eelam War IV, he commanded the snipers as the Commanding Officer in Marksmanship & Sniper Training School (MSTS).

On the recommendations of the Commander of the Army, HE the President a few days ago elevated Brigadier Sanjaya Wanasinghe and Brigadier Sujeewa Senarath Yapa to their next ranks with effect from 2 June 2020 retrospectively. Running sport media | Women's Designer Sneakers - Luxury Shopping
