Major General Janaka Ratnayake during a simple ceremony on Wednesday (19) morning assumed duties as the new Commissioner General of Rehabilitation at the Bureau of the Commissioner General of Rehabilitation at Rajagiriya.
After he was welcomed by senior officers and officials on arrival at the office premises, a brief religious ceremony, led by two Buddhist monks invoked blessings on the new appointment after chanting Pirith.
As the auspicious minute struck, Major General Ratnayake signifying the acceptance of the new office, placed his signature for a formal document.
The office of the Commissioner General of Rehabilitation remained vacant after the sudden demise of Major General Jagath Wijetilleke on 4 July 2015.
Out of approximately twelve thousand ex-combatants willingly surrendered and who opted for rehabilitation, a total of 11,600 were rehabilitated and reintegrated into the society by this office since its founding.
Many have been given in marriage and 594 child soldiers have already been reunited with their families after rehabilitation. They are now into higher education, permanent employment and contributing to National Economy, whilst enjoying and living in peaceful environments in their original habitats with kith and kin.
Mr. Suhada Gamlath, Lieutenant General Daya Rathnayake, Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe, Major General Chandana Rajaguru, Brigadier Dharshana Hettiarrachchi and late Major General Jagath Wijetilleke served earlier as Commissioners General of Rehabilitation.
