Major General Jagath Gunawardena on Wednesday (20) relinquished his duties as the Commander, Security Forces - Wanni (SF-W) after he was appointed as the new Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF).
Military formalities such as a Guard Turnout and a Guard of Honour, accorded by troops of 8 Field Engineers Regiment saluted him as the first segment of the farewell ceremony at the Security Force Headquarters - Wanni (SFHQ-W) premises.
Prior to the Guard of Honour, Major General Jagath Gunawardena paid his tribute to fallen War Heroes at the Wanni monument laying a floral wreath. After the formalities in the parade ground Major General Jagath Gunawardena joined an all rank tea, organized at the ‘Me Wadana Ge’, the Other Ranks’ Mess.
After a while, the outgoing Commander Security Forces - Wanni addressed all troops at the auditorium, thanked all of them and awarded gifts to the winners in the Inter Division Essay Competition, organized as per guidelines given by Major General Jagath Gunawardena.
Finally, the outgoing Commander wished all Officers and Other Ranks good luck with their future projects and drove away in a street-line farewell.
General Officers Commanding, Brigade Commanders, Commanding Officers and many Other Ranks in all under command formations of the SFHQ-Wanni were present during departing formalities.
Prior to the formalities at the SFHQ-Wanni, he also made formal farewell visits to the 54, 61 and 62 Division Headquarters under command to the SFHQ-Wanni respectively on Tuesday (19).
During the visit to the 54 Division, the Commander, Security Forces - Wanni was warmly welcomed by the General Officer Commanding of 54 Division, Brigadier A.A.I.J Bandara before he was greeted to a Guard Turnout at the entrance to the 54 Division. Afterwards, the Commander, Security Forces -Wanni addressed the troops and subsequently joined an all rank tea arrangement.
On the same day, he also visited the 61 Division and was warmly welcomed by Major General R.K.B.S Ketakumbura, General Officer Commanding, 61 Division and invited him to address the troops in the 61 Division as a formality. Thereafter he shared refreshments with all ranks at the venue.
On his way back, the outgoing Wanni Commander made the day’s final visit to the 62 Division where he was warmly received by the General Officer Commanding, 62 Division, Major General Dammika Jayasinghe.
Similarly, he visited the 56, 21, 62 Divisions and Forward Maintenance Area (FMA) - North Central on Sunday (17) and bade farewell to all.
During the visits, he was welcomed by Brigadier Jaliya Senarathne, General Officer Commanding, 56 Division and by Major General Kumar Jayapathirane, General Officer Commanding, 21 Division at respective venues. The day’s programme culminated with a visit to the Forward Maintenance Area (North Central) where Major General Rasika Karunathilake, Commander, FMA (North Central) warmly welcomed the Commander, SF-W when he arrived at the Headquarters.
Major General A.M.R Dharmasiri succeeded him as the new Commander of Security Forces-Wanni.
