Major General Chandana Wijayasundara’s Service Praised

Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, Commander of the Army this evening (2) lent his best wishes and compliments to one more Senior Officer, Major General W.M.G.C.S.B Wijayasundara RSP USP ndu, Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna and Colonel Commandant, Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE), just hours before his retirement from the Army upon completion of more than 35 years of unblemished service.

The outgoing Senior Officer at the invitation of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, together with his family members arrived at the Commander’s office.

The Army Chief during the meeting with the retiring Senior Officer praised him for his dedicated service and performance of diverse responsibilities with unfailing commitment and selflessness. Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage specifically recalled the Senior Officer’s contribution to the growth of the Engineer Division of the Army and also his professional roles in nation-building tasks and assignments, entrusted to the Army. The Commander of the Army also spoke highly of his service as Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna and the projects he undertook in the peninsula which in turn attributed to the promotion of goodwill and reconciliation.

Major General W.M.G.C.S.B Wijayasundara RSP USP ndu in return thanked the Army Commander for the invitation and expressed his gratitude for the able guidance the Commander extended to him all the time in the performance of his office as the Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna.

The Army Chief while sharing a few pleasantries with his family members invited to the occasion also inquired into the retiring Senior Officer’s future endeavours and plans. The Commander of the Army simultaneously commended the invaluable support that has been given to the Senior Officer by his family members throughout his career particularly during challenging times while the retiring Senior Officer was engaged in operations elsewhere on the battlefield to safeguard the motherland.

Towards the end of the interaction, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage awarded a special memento to the retiring Senior Officer as a symbol of appreciation and commendation along with a special gift to the family.

Major General W.M.G.C.S.B Wijayasundara RSP USP ndu enlisted to the Sri Lanka Army on 20 July 1987 and underwent basic military training in the Sri Lanka Military Academy in the Intake 28 before he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Sri Lanka Engineers. He was promoted to the rank of Major General on 16 October 2020.

He has been holding the office of the Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna at the time of his retirement. He also held the appointments of Troop Commander, Adjutant, Course Officer, Sri Lanka Military Academy, Officer Commanding 53 Squadron, Brigade Major, 232 Infantry Brigade, Staff Officer 2, Regimental Centre SLE, Second in Command, Additional Company Commander, United Nations Mission - Haiti, General Staff Officer 1 (Operations), 51 Infantry Division, Commanding Officer 11 Field SLE, Colonel (General Staff), Security Forces - Jaffna, Colonel (Media), Directorate of Media, Army Headquarters (AHQ), Chief Executive Officer, Laya Leisure - Kukuleganga, Comd, 592 Bde, Commander, Nation Building Task Force, Commander, Plant Engineer Brigade, Director Staff Duties - AHQ, Commander, Engineer Division, Chief Field Engineer - AHQ and Colonel Commandant, SLE.

During his service period, he has undergone many local and overseas courses including, Unit Administration Course and Senior Tactics and Management Course, Young Officers’ Course, Pakistan, Engineer Officers Earth Moving Plant and Construction Course, India, Humanitarian Mine Action and the Military Course, Switzerland, Senior Command Course, India, Diploma in Defence Management, India and Defence and Strategic Course, National Defence University, China.

For his bravery and gallantry on the battlefield, he has been awarded the ‘Rana Sura Padakkama’.
