MAJOR GEN KOTTEGODA APPOINTED OVERALL OPERATIONAL COMMANDER (EAST)

Chief of Staff of the Army Major Gen S. H. S. Kottegoda WWV RWP RSP USP ndc has been appointed Overall Operational Commander (East) with immediate effect.

Accordingly, Major Gen Kottegoda, who will be in overall command of all Armed Forces, Police and Special Task Force personnel deployed in the East, will take appropriate courses of action to improve the security situation in the Eastern Province in consultation with Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army Lt. Gen L. P Balagalle.

This appointment has been made on Monday (24 May 2004) in the wake of a series of security related incidents in the eastern Batticaloa and Ampara districts where members of the Armed Forces, Police, civilians and LTTE cadres were killed. Most of those LTTE killings were however attributed to the ongoing internecine LTTE clashes.
