LTTE Vessel with Arms &; Other Items Goes in Flames after Navy Intercepted

MATARA : LTTE\'S ARMS SMUGGLING via sea was further paralyzed as one more LTTE arms-carrying vessel sailing in the high seas, about 1700 km south of DONDRA POINT met its doom after a fleet of Naval ships blocked its passage and attacked early this morning (7).

The LTTE arms vessel sans ensign, identified as MV \'MATSHUSIMA\' was initially challenged with a couple of warning shots but the suspicious ship discharged medium range caliber gunfire at the sailors who in turn retaliated with guns mounted on their ships. The detection was made by the Naval troops around 5.30 a.m. and the subsequent sea battle sank the LTTE ship, believed to be transporting arms and explosives, high-speed water scooters, sophisticated diving apparatus and high power transmission equipment to LTTE around 9.30 a.m.

Sources revealed that the ship was 70 meter long with 3000 tonnage

This was the 8th arms carrying LTTE vessel destroyed by the Sri Lanka Navy.
