Kilinochchi Troops Still Continue Their Repair & Relief Roles for Affected Families

Troops serving under the Security Force HQ - Kilinochchi in the past few days (3-7 December) are continuing their evacuation and rescue efforts, clearance of roads, emergency repairs and provision of cooked meals to hundreds of cyclonic weather-affected people in several areas in the Kilinochchi region on the directions of Major General Sampath Kotuwegoda, Commander, Security Forces-Kilinochchi.

Those emergency measures are carried out in close cooperation with the troops serving the 57 & 66 Divisions under guidance given by the General Officer Commanding of the 57 Division, Major General Sujeewa Senarathyapa and the General Officer Commanding of the 66 Division, Major General Jagath Kodithuwakku respectively.

6 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment troops of the 57 Division began to provide hot meals and dry ration packs for flood-affected families in Periyakulam and Kattakadu areas in close contact with the Grama Niladari and state officials since flood water levels surrounding their houses have not fully receded as of Sunday (6) evening. In the meantime, troops assisted the families to remove some fallen trees and other paraphernalia from their roofs and compounds in some affected areas in the general area of Viswamadu.

In the meantime, 14 Sri Lanka National Guard troops in the 572 Brigade cleared the Punnaniravi-Thirimanthal Aru road by repairing a culvert that had been washed away with gushing flood waters. Similarly, 9 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment troops in the 573 Infantry Brigade repaired the damaged tank bund of the Matadakulam due to torrential rains and spilling waters and averted a mass scale overflowing of the area.

Troops of the 5(Vol) Mechanized Infantry Regiment meanwhile took steps to evacuate 04 families of 17 members from vulnerable areas to safer places and housed some of them in the Pathimatha Church and began providing meals to them till Monday (7). Likewise, 11 (Vol) Gajaba Regiment troops in the 663 Brigade immediately attended to a blocked drainage system along Nachchikuda-Kumalamunei road with the support of civilians and restored its waterways to avoid flooding.

In the wake of the emergency warning of the Meterology Department, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army rushed to the Wanni region and alerted all troops in respective areas to be vigilant of imminent impact of the cyclonic weather patterns that could be developed.
