Kilinochchi Troops Generate Income for Needy Civilians

The Security Force Headquarters - Kilinochchi has launched a variety of projects, meant to improve living standards of people in Kilinochchi, inclusive of production of different Palmyra products among needy families in remote areas.

66 Division’s General Officer Commanding, Major General Ajith Dissanayake, together with the 661 Brigade Commander and his troops in order to provide a better market for traditional Palmyra products has also begun educative programmes on Palmyra products. Accordingly, 47 trainees from the civil society are undergoing a training course in this regard, encouraging them to innovate new handicrafts, food products, etc.

Similarly, 24 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR ) and 5 (V) Mechanized Infantry Regiment (MIR) troops after selecting 4 low-income families distributed 25 chicks among those families enabling them to earn an extra income of about Rs 150 - 200 per day after August 2021.

Moreover, 20 Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) has initiated a Compost Fertilizer Project to reduce the high volume of organic wastage at the battalion levels and to recycle the nutrients back to crops being farmed in the battalion farm. The main aim of this project is to seek feasibility of usage of the Compost Fertilizers instead of other Chemical Fertilizers by promoting the same among local farmers in the area.

In addition to above mentioned projects, 20 (V) VIR troops have provided raw materials to Mr. P Subramaniam for preparation of Murukku (snacks) and other savory snacks. All the canteens and Army Welfare shops in the 66 Infantry Division area are now used to buy his productions in order to generate an additional income.

At the request of the former Commander, 662 Brigade, Brigadier Ravi Pathiravithana, a project launched by the Rotary Club - Colombo Fort to construct two water tanks was completed benefiting 56 families living in Serukkan and Seethakudiirippu villages. Those to thanks were vested in the public a few days ago by the Commander, Security Forces - Kilinochchi, Major General Harendra Ranasinghe and the General Officer Commanding, 66 Division. Under the close supervision of the Commanding Officer of 20 SLLI, Lieutenant Colonel I.K.A.C Kumara, 20 SLLI troops contributed technical knowledge and skilled manpower to this project.

Moreover, 2 Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) troops distributed 100 chicks and newly - made 4 cages for 4 Tamil families with 25 chicks for each family. 250 Turkey Berry (Thibbatu) saplings were also distributed among 10 families (25 plants for each family).
