Kilinochchi Receives Number of VVIP Visitors

A MINISTERIAL delegation led by Mr. Namal Rajapaksa MP visited Kilinochchi to attend the opening of a series of development projects in Kilinochchi on 17th June. They included, releasing of 200,000 Herring to Akkarayankulam tank, opening of the Electricity Board consumer service station, the District Vocational Training Centre, Handing over of 3 SLTB buses to Kilinochchi Depot, opening of a SATHOSA outlet and the opening of a newly built NAITA Centre in Kilinochchi.

There was also a Medical Clinic conducted throughout the day, attended by 50 Specialist doctors held at Kanakapuram Vidyalaya. The opening of a newly built National Youth Services Centre coincided with the distribution of Sports goods, a Volleyball tournament and a Musical Show. There was a friendly Volleyball game where a team formed by Ministers and MPs played against the Vavuniya team.

The Governor for Northern Province Major General (Retd) G.A Chandrasiri, Security Forces Commander Kilinochchi Major General Chandana Rajaguru and District Secretary for Kilinochchi Mrs. R Ketheeswaran facilitated the Government Departments to organise these events.

In the meantime, the Japanese special envoy to Sri Lanka Mr. Yasushi Akashi who is visiting the island these days came to Kilinochchi on 18 June 2010 to see the progress under ongoing development projects initiated by the government after the area was liberated from the clutches of LTTE terrorists. Two cabinet ministers Mr. Basil Rajapaksa , the Minister of Economy Development and Mr. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardane, the Minister of Agriculture also accompanied him.

 During this visit Mr. Akashi distributed 35 two wheel and 2 four wheel tractors and 9 water pumps among selected farmers from the area as donations from Japanese government. He also layed foundation stone to build a government farm in Paranthan with the assistance of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Mr. Akashi also had a field visit in Kilinochchi before leaving Colombo.
