‘International Mother’s Day’ was marked at Kilinochchi with a difference, paying tribute to a gathering of Sinhala and Tamil mothers who lost their sons in the 30 year-long terrorist war.
The initiative in this connection was taken by the Security Force Headquarters - Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN) on a suggestion, made by Major General Udaya Perera, Security Force Commander, Kilinochchi to the District Secretariat for Kilinochchi.
The event, held at Kilinochchi Co-operative Conference Hall on Friday (10) gathered more than 30 such mothers from Kilinochchi, Vishwamadu, Paranthan, Mankulam, Thunukkai, Mallavi and Pooneryn areas and a similar group of 30 mothers from Anuradhapura, Horowpathana, Medawachchiya, Kebethigollewa, Polonnaruwa, Kalutara, Dambulla, Kandana and Kurunegala areas where they were honoured and awarded valuable gift parcels after providing them with an opportunity to listen to a lecture on ‘Responsibilities of a Mother for Eternal Peace’.
Mrs R Kethishwaran, District Secretary for Kilinochchi attended the event as the Chief Guest. Several senior citizens, 58, 65 and 66 Division General Officers Commanding and a gathering of Tamil citizens in the area were also associated with the occasion.
