Kilinochchi New Year Festival to Promote Harmony


Taking all possible measures of fostering goodwill, harmony and spirits of reconciliation, Security Force Headquarters - Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN) arranged a mammoth Sinhala and Hindu New Year festival at Kilinochchi Public Grounds on Saturday (5).

The festival comprising various folk games of both Sinhala and Tamil cultural traditions dominated the entire event, adding colour and amusement in the presence of a large gathering of civilians, youngsters, children, state officials, service personnel and others.

Hon. Namal Rajapaksa (MP), attended the festival as the Chief Guest, together with Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe, Commander, SFHQ-KLN.

Games such as eye-placing in the elephant, pot-cracking, tug of war, cross country run, selection of New Year prince and princess, grease pole climbing, coconut scraping, slow-motion bicycle ring, tractor reversing, kabbadi, bun-eating, cadjan-weaving, fancy dress, egg-catching and so on brought entertainment to the spectators throughout the day.

Major General (Retd) G.A Chandrasiri, Governor for Northern Province, Ms Rupa Kethishwaran, District Secretary, Kilinochchi, Kilinochchi District Parliamentarians, Mr Murugeshu Chandrakumara and Mrs Geethanjalee Naguleshwaran, District Secretary for Kilinochchi, state officials and villagers were present during the event.
