KDU Spreads Its Wings to Sevanagala with Two New Faculties


Ratmalana-based General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), which has shot to fame as one of the best academic institutions, further spread its academic wings on Thursday (6) by initiating to have its first Southern Campus established in Sevanagala, close to Sooriyawewa.

The cornerstone-laying ceremony for the proposed campus construction occurred this morning, amid participation of a distinguished gathering, headed by Mr. Lalith Weeratunga, Secretary to HE the President as the Chief Guest, together with Mr. Gotabaya Rajapakse, Secretary to Ministry of Defence and Urban Development, Mrs Damayanthi Jayarathne, Additional Secretary to Ministry of Defence, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army, Chiefs of Staff of Sri Lanka Navy and Air Force, KDU Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, academics and a host of other guests.

Under the proposed two phases of the project, the KDU’s Southern Campus is to house the new Faculty of Built-Environment and Spatial Services and the Faculty of Computing at a cost of Rs 200 million, allocated by President’s Special Initiative Fund on the directions of HE, the President in September 2013 in response to a request of the KDU.  

The Faculty of Built-Environment and Spatial Services that would promote and explore possibilities of tapping the resources in the space as well as new technologies, fast developing in the sphere, vis-à-vis environmental factors, is to absorb 100 students at the initial intake for scientific and academic research, subject to international standards.

The Faculty of Computing, to be raised under the second phase of the project by 2015 will also take 100 students for the inaugural Intake.

The new campus, directly under the purview of the KDU at Ratmalana is to be managed by a rector in conformity with provisions in the University Grants Commission.

After the auspicious foundation-laying ceremony on the proposed campus, all  distinguished guests, joined a tree-planting programme in the premises.         
     
State officials, lecturers, tri-service officers and a large gathering attended the ceremonies at Sevanagala.
