Just after Quarantine Army Helps Better Lives of Drug Addicts by Sending them for Rehabilitation

Upon a Court ruling from the Polonnaruwa Magistrate on Wednesday (06) 25 drug addicts who had completed the quarantine process at the Army-managed Galkanda Quarantine Centre were admitted to the Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre for Drug Addicts in Kandakadu.

Those individuals from Nagalanvidiya and Thotalanga areas underwent a 21-day quarantine after they were identified, having associated with COVID-19 positive persons in those areas. Commander 233 Brigade Brigadier R Elvitigala took this initiative afterwards and directed them to the Centre for rehabilitation where drug addicts undergo rehabilitation and trained for vocations.

On the instructions of Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff, Commander of the Army and Head of the National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak the measure was taken to make them productive persons to society and their own families on the guidelines of the Commander Security Forces -East, Major General Rasika Fernando.

Brigadier RagithElvitigala personally took the burden of getting them admitted to the centre after legal proceedings, considering the humanitarian aspect of those 25 drug addicts. During this state-patronized process of 8 months of rehabilitation, those individuals are trained for different vocations that would suit their varying skills before they are sent back home.
