Javelin Athlete, Nadeeka Lakmali to Receive Continued Sponsorship for Her Training


Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF), appreciative of achievements of the world-class Javelin Throw athlete, Warrant Officer - 1 B.L. Nadeeka Lakmali of 4 Battalion (V) Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC) who secured the world’s 12th rank, having entered the final round at the recent IAAF World Athletics Championship, was awarded a permanent scholarship that would help continue her athletic training further.

On the directions of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, the newly-appointed SLAVF Commandant, Major General S.A.P.P. Samarasinghe after initiating the project, succeeded in obtaining the financial sponsorship of Mr Buddhika Kadurugamuwa, Chairman, Blackstone Engineering (Pvt) Ltd.

Nadeeka Lakmali of the SLAVF, who has been faced with financial constraints to go ahead with her continued athletic training, accordingly received a sum of Rs 100,000/= to cover her training costs for a period of 5 months at the initial period.

The SLAVF has been assured continued financial support to the athlete by the same sponsor as an incentive for promotion of her athletic skills after 5 months again with the same type of support.

The brief ceremony for award of the first financial instalment of this scholarship took place at the SLAVF Headquarters, Kosgama on Friday (4).

Mr Kadurugamuwa, the sponsor of the scholarship for training presented the cheque to the Warrant Officer - 1 Nadeeka Lakmali in the presence of Major General S.A.P.P. Samarasinghe, Commandant, SLAVF, Major General W.D.L.P Wickramasinghe, Deputy Commandant, SLAVF and Brigadier W.A.N.M. Weerasinghe, Principal Staff Officer.

The SLAVF soon after her arrival in Sri Lanka upon achievements in Javelin Throw gifted her with a sum of Rs 25,000/= as an appreciative gesture, a few months ago.
