COLOMBO: NOMINATIONS for JAFFNA and VAVUNIYA local government elections are to be called for shortly after the gazette notification to that effect was issued, Minister for Local Government JANAKA BANDARA TENNAKOON announced at a media briefing held Monday (25) morning.
Nominations for JAFFNA Municipal Council and VAVUNIYA Urban Council are to be filed between June 14-28 and Election dates are to be fixed afterwards, the Minister has further announced.
Local Elections to both these councils could not be held in the past twenty years or more as a result of Tiger (LTTE) violence and disruptions caused by terrorists. More than two dozens of local Tamil politicians had to lay their lives as a result of LTTE dictatorship.
