Jaffna Troops Renovate Abandoned Farming Tank

Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J) using its machinery and much-needed manpower at the request of ‘Friends of Jaffna’ and Vadukkodai South West Farmers Association completely renovated the tank near the Arali Shettiarmadam Periyathambiran temple in Vadukkoddai.

Both organizations after meeting Major General Dharshana Hettiarrachchi, Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J) sought the Army assistance for renovation of this farming tank which remains almost abandoned for some time. Its water has been earlier used for cultivation purposes but after it was neglected, farmers had been forced to get down water from remote areas for agricultural needs.

District Secretariat for Jaffna agreed to provide funds for renovation work following discussions they have had with representatives farmers. Army troops with heavy machinery and equipment effectively carried out the project and completed it within a few weeks.

The formal handover ceremony of the resurrected tank took place a few days ago during a ceremony near the tank. Major General Dharshana Hettiarrachchi, Mr S Balachandran, Consul General of India in Jaffna, Major General Roshan Seneviratne, General Officer Commanding, 51 Division, senior Officers, Other Ranks and a large gathering of farmers in the area participated in the event.
